Try disabling sygayte on the xp machine.
Also do you know about when it went out. You can check which dates you installed windows updates and delete that one if you believe that is the reason.

Tried disabling sygate it doesn't seem to solve anything as for the updates had not done them in a while so there was quite a few security updates.

You need to enable file and print sharing on the XP machine. It is disabled by default.

Print and file sharing is enabled on the XP and 98 machine. I have ran the network set up wizard also and it tells me it has ran in to an 'unknown Error'

Is the XP machine sharing any file or print resources?

It is sharing it's internet connection with no problems. It is set up to share it's C Drive but this can not be seen from the 98 Machine.

There is a rash of folks having network browsing issues these days as in the following thread...

You might want to also double check to ensure you have both machines on the same workgroup too. Also on a "flat" network, you can get by with Netbeui for file and print. It's faster too.

thanks for that. Seems the problem i'm having is to do with sygate firewall on the XP machine if i disable it on the XP i can see it from the 98 machine. But if i disable it on both i can't see either machines!! Thanks for your Help looks like i will ahve to go to Sygate.

In that case, Netbeui may also get you to what you want, since Sygate only deals with TCP/IP. Netbeui is limited to functioning in a non-routed LAN, so it is pretty safe from intrusion attacks (unless the attacker is sitting inside your Netbeui LAN).
