Hi I hope this is the correct forum...if not someone please tell me ...Ta

I'm trying to network a WIN98SE pci firewire desktop host with an XPpro laptop

Machine specs are
1. Desktop Win98SE 800Mhz 512MB Ram, fully updated OS patches as a host with a USB broadband connection and PCI firewire 1394 port and
2. an AGP 8880E 3.06GHz Laptop with 1 GB ram (full spec at http://www.ajp.co.uk/8880.html) running XP pro

I want to network these machines using the fast 1394 transfer but I have network problems setting up.

Can someone please please help...

I've spent four days trying to do this and my patience is still togeher but my frustration levels are at nuclear
proportions.

I'll try to be as clear as possible...

I bought an Lucent IEEE1394 PCI adapter card -InnoVISION DV1000LE from DABS at http://www.dabs.com/179GMF for my win 98 desktop machine so I could transfer files quickly without having to buy an expensive wireless mini pci module for my
laptop, which already has a firewire port.

I want to have the 98 machine as the host... I've installed the PCI card on the 98se machine...the Laptop sees the 1394 connection and says it is working. The desktop does not show a 1394 connection but it is in the device manager and that says it is working and has no conflicts

However I cannot access files or see the 98 machine from the
laptop or the laptop from the 98 machine.

Its also confusing to me how I can set up a new workgroup on the 98
machine ...though I've set one up on the xp pro machine,
it only sees its own files...and not the win98 ones or the existing
workgroup...which has the same name as the xp pro workgroup

I've tried lots of permuations and most of the help guides in win xp
but I'm just getting tied up in knots!!

If ayone can give some assistance I'd really appreciate
it.

Thank you VERY MUCH

Pressuming that the hardware is correct, you could first of all use the checklist on:

http://practicallynetworked.com/sharing/

If you want to have a peer-to-peer connection, workgroup names should be identical. You can change the workgroup name in win98se at the properties of this computer. Make sure they are perfectly identical.

If you want to test it fully, you might start off with fixed ip's. Note that the host pc, needs to have the ip 192.168.0.1. This ip, should be the gateway at the client pc. The client pc's ip should also be in the 192.168.0.x range. Gateways identical.

Make sure you restart the 98se machine everytime you change something on the level above.

Try the checklist and let us know, good luck :D

Eric

thanks for your quick reply

I looked at the checklist page you mentioned but I don't really know where to start ... or do I need to go through all of PC links sequentially? I've listed those that I think relate to my problem but I'm a user not really a computer tech person....Though I am a music tech person which gives me some tenacity in the problem solving department... I still feel like I'm out of my depth....

I've cut and pasted the subject lines below from the page link you gave ...if you could please just return this post with an 'X' next to those I should pursue then I can have a sense of direction to my surging about, which I must admit, feels like a bull in a china shop :)

Thanks again

Paul

Ok, there we go :D ,

For the checklist on your 98se machine, the host, start off with this page.

http://practicallynetworked.com/sharing/ics/icsinstall.htm

For the checklist on your winXP pro machine, the client, start off with this page.

http://practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/clientwiz.htm

Mind you, that you need at least some kind of basic of networking knowlegde before "just making a go setting it up." If not, you might want to call in some help.

Just give it a go...... if it won't work. Let us know. ;)

Hang on... Firewire networking is only natively supported under XP and ME, not SE!!! In order to work under SE, you need a 3rd party product by the name of Firenet...

Twiddle as you wish, but there is no native Firewire networking support on SE...

Hi Eric

I use windows 98 for music programs, some of them do not support XPpro

I have an XPpor disc that came with my laptop but I have been told that I would need to buy another license for XP pro and I haven't got the cash for that at the moment.

So I guess I'll keep trying with win 98

Thanks

Glad that things are working out for you. Firewire performance is great, it feels like the remote hard drive is practically attached directly...
