I recently set up my home network using a Netgear
RP114 router. All went swimmingly until my PC, running XP bit the dust with terminal HDD failure :-(. I still had my old drive as a slave unit which already had Win 98 SE on it. At this stage, both of the other 2 PC's on the network do, and still do work perfectly on the net via the router.
I reinstalled the Intel Ethernet card on the slave unit to get me back on the net, and did this OK. Problem is, I then thought, my PC isn't networked any more with the other 2, so I fiddled with 'Network' in Control Panel.
There did not seem to be any Networking Wizard with Win98, so I gave up.
Next time I rebooted, I got DNS errors. Ever since, I can't get it to work.

I have installed and uninstalled TCP?IP, NetBeui (and without it), Client for Microsoft Networks and enabled File and Printer sharing, leaving all the defaults. I have taken the Ethernet card out removed drivers etc.
If I run winipcfg /all, I get the following: -
Host name - me
DNS Servers - blank
Node Type - broadcast
Netbios scope id - blank
Ip routing enabled - greyed out
WINS proxy enabled - greyed out
Netbios resolution uses dns - greyed out
Ethernet adapter info - Intel 8255x based integrated fast Ethernet
Adapter address - 00 etc
IP authentication address 169.254 etc
Subnet mask - 255.255.0.0
Default gateway - greyed and blank
DHCP server - 255.255.255.255
Primary WINS server - greyed and blank
Secondary WINS server - greyed and blank
Lease obtained - today's date
Lease expires - blank

If I click renew, I get a VB box saying Error 32.renewing adapter""
I have tried inputting the IP address to 192.168.0.2 (my PC) and the default gateway of 255.255.255.0 but that doesn't work either. The only thing I noticed was that in Safe Mode, the IRQ and I/O were different than in normal mode, which uses IRQ15. I have configured Safe Mode to use the same settings, but get an error message about 'protocol 1 error' (I think).
Any thoughts guys?

The only thing I can see from your message is that your DHCP server and default gateway is incorrect.. They should both be 192.168.0.xx, usually .1
Is your pc set up to get it's address from the router (DHCP)? Also, make sure the pc is in the same workgroup...
Hope this helps...

Hi DynamO, the Win98 machine with the problem is not networked at all. The 2 other PC's (running Win ME) are still networked and share files OK. My problems started when I was trying to network mine back onto theirs, but i couldn't see any way of networking Win 98 from Control panel etc, as there seems to be no network wizard.
I don't know whether resetting the router will help. I don't want to lose my connection to the net on the other 2 PC's.
Thanks for the help.

A little confused here.. You say it is not networked.. I assume you mean it's wired, but it can't make a connection.. Win98 networking is usually pretty easy.. Right-click on the Network Neighbourhood on your desktop.. go to properties.. In TCPIP properties for your Nic, set it to get it's ip dynamically(DHCP from the router).. reboot.. As long as you're in the same workgroup as the other 2 machines, you should be able to see them.. You may also want to check your device manager and make sure your network card doesn't show a problem there.
good luck..

Sorry for the confusion. The machine is hooked up to the router - it's just that it can't connect to the internet or receive mail or news due to dns errors. It also cannot be seen by the other 2 PC's. I will have to try to re-enable Network Neighborhood as it's not on the Desktop. All 3 PC's were on the default workgroup (MSHOME).
