I am having a problem with our new server. Currently we have ten computers hooked up on our network. Three machines are running XP Pro, five machines are on 98, one is on ME and the server is 2k server. We have a DSL router and three linksys switches. Each switch is set up as a mini network. One has two computers, one three, and the other 5. Every computer can see each other without problems. We have two main programs that we would like the server to be the host of. One is our accounting system and the other is a scheduling program. My problem is the Data transfer speed is slow coming off the server. I can ping the server and get responses less than 1ms. I can even copy things too and from the server with high speeds. The slowest transfer occurs between the XP machines and the 2k server. For example opening up a 4.16Mb excel file takes almost two minutes on the XP machines. On the 98 machines it takes about 15 seconds.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I am new to networking and my superiors want results! Thanks

Are you using mixed protocols or just TCP/IP?

Are you XP PCs up to date with all SP1 and SP2 updates?

BTW A ping <1ms is only possible by pinging yourself.

I am only using TCP/IP protocols. I will go to the microsoft web page and see if there are any updates that I need.

I figured out the problem. It was slow because NetBeui needed to be installed on the server and all of the XP machines. Now the speed is great!! Thanks for the replies
