I have a LAN of 3 systems #1 win2000, #2 win xp pro, #3 win 98se, connected buy a hub. The win2000 system has a D: drive (hard drive) that I want to share with the 98se system, to read and copy from.
I have all systems in the same workgroup (HOMELAN) and I have enabled sharing of the 2000 D:drive and gave it the share name, W2000.
I can use this W2000 drive from my xp system, I can "see" all of my others systems from the Win2000 system (#2,#3) and can use there resourses, but (and this is where I'm stumped) I can not get the win 98se system to have access to the D: drive of the 2000 system. I can see the 2000 system name under "My Network" from the 98 system.
When I click on "My Network" icon on the desktop of the 98se system, it shows the others. I can make use of the xp system, but when I try to access the win2000 system and the "enter network password" box pops up, it shows the 2000 system named as, Resource: \\W2000\IPC$ and of cource has a place for a password to be entered, But any password I put in there is denied, and if I right click the 2000 system from the 98 system and select Properties, I get a box telling me I do not have the appropriate access rights for this server, contact the network administrator, and thats me!
I can ping the w2000 system from the 98 system and they all are in fat32, and each system has it's own name, but for the life of me I don't know what I'm doing to prevent me from having access to the 2000 system D: drive, from the 98 system.
Now if I havent lost you in all of this, do any of you have any ideas where to go from what I have told you?

In windows 2000 drives that are shared are treated as hidden null shares hence IPC$ <$ denotes a hidden share> Have you set it to give non-administrator's rw access. If that doesn't work you may need to share specific folders within the drive.

Hi,
I have a network with a Win2k machine and a Win98 machine. No problem in sharing drives on the Win2k

I had to add the logon username and password for the Win98 machine as a user on the Win2k machine.

Then when I shared the drive on the Win2k machine, I had to add the Win98 user in the permissions.

Hope that is helpful. Worked for me.
