Hi all,
Sorry to sound like an idiot, but I have a Dlink router (DI-704) but can't seem to get a port open so I can use Kazaa. It has a pretty good web interface but I don't have any experience with routers. Can someone explain to me what to do to open a specific port and how port numbers work, etc. ?
Tia for any help.

Dlink Router has a forwarding capabilities, try accessing the web utility of the Dlink router. by launching your I.E and type in the IP address of your router. if you dont know the IP of your router. go to the command prompt by hitting start --> run --> command or cmd (choose between the 2) and after that do a Ipconfig/all and look for the default gateway address (that is your IP address) look for the forwarding tab and input the specific port that you want to open.

in using this port forwarding you need to know the specific port of the application that you want to run behind the router. now the port for the kazaa application is 1214. run this number on the port forwarding of your router and if theres an option that says enable TCP and UDP, enable them. i dont know much about the web utility of your router, but i bet they have some work arounds on it. visit www.dlink.com for further reference:cool:

Thanks very much for replying. I have no problem getting to the configuration screen for the router. It's when I get there that there's no mention of port forwarding. I'm sure it's there but they are just not using those terms.
If you go to: http://www.littlewhitedog.com/reviews_hardware_00031.asp
you will see the screenshots of the setup.
Would you mind having a look and telling me which one I use for port forwarding?
I have figured out the DMZ but don't want to use that unless I have to .
Tia for any help.

Hi Algae..
I have the DI-707, and in the advanced section under virtual servers, I put in the port#, the ip address of the computer, and enable it.. save and reboot the router for the change to take effect... Hope this helps...

Thanks very much. I'm at work now but when I get home I'll give it a try.
