I am having an impossible time getting internet sharing to work over a HPNA phoneline network. File sharing is however apparantly working fine.

I have a desktop PC that's on Earthlink DSL, networked with a Dell laptop, using an Intel Anypoint 10 PCI card in the desktop, and a new SMC2832HPNA 10 PCI card in the laptop. Both have Windows 2000 Professional. I have since uninstalled all the original Intel Connectivity Suite software, and I'm relying totally on Windows own networking functions and Microsoft ICS, since I have not found any third-party software that can replicate the Intel Anypoint ISS software. My reason for removing the Intel AP USB adapter from the laptop, was because it was giving me problems.

ping mindspring.com from the laptop command prompt gets "host unreachable" or "host unknown" errors. ipconfig checked out fine.

Also now When my server PC boots up, it prompted me to click OK on the login box where I have "Administrator" and leave the password blank, which it never did before. I really want to get this back to do like it did before - briefly flash up on the screen for like a second than automatically go away.

If possible, I might like to try a generic third-party HPNA software -preferably freeware, to take over all my networking functions, and be compatible with both the Intel and SMC phoneline devices. Is there such a product available?

Another issue I have is concerns about firewall security. I was forced to manually enter both the IP addresses of both computers into my Norton Internet Security firewall as "Trusted Computers" in order for this network to function, but I am very concerned about this opening a possible security hole.

I also noticed in the Dell laptop, in System Properties > Network Identification tab > the lower options are greyed out, and I don't know how to enable them, in case they might be part of the problem.

ipconfig checked out fine
So the laptop shows IP=192.168.0.2, Gateway 192.168.0.1 and DNS addesses 192.168.0.1 ?

I might like to try a generic third-party HPNA software
Why, if the file sharing is working then the HPNA connections are working.

I was forced to manually enter both the IP addresses of both computers into my Norton Internet Security firewall as "Trusted Computers"
Seems unecessary but not a security problem.

Dell laptop, in System Properties > Network Identification tab > the lower options are greyed out,
Not sure where you are seeing this. Again, if file sharing working then its not a problem.

Greenstead,
It looks like I will need to find an internet sharing software program that works the same way as the Intel Anypoint connectivity software, in order to be able to share my internet connection. I will want something that automatically takes care of all the IPs and DNS stuff for me, so I don't have to manually configure any proxys. The existing Intel AP adapter in my server PC is working fine, but the Intel USB network adapter for the laptop has been having too many problems such as "Your PC is running low on memory" errors. I unfortunately cannot use the Intel software with non-Intel hardware. Sygate is one possibility. Proxy servers don't work. I already tried a few of those. ComSocks, AnalogX, Nshare. PPPshar only worked for SOME webpages, and won't work at all for Eudora email.

I did some more research on sharing internet connections and found that Microsoft ICS doesn't work with PPPoE, which my Earthlink DSL is. http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/ics/ics_troubleshoot.htm#at%20all I didn't mention earlier that I use RASPPPoE to log on instead of the WinPoet software, because it's so much better and is completely stable. WinPoet is slow and unstable in Windows 2000.

File sharing from the laptop to the server PC has been NO problem, but going the other way has been problematic.

Thanks,
Fred
