Hi,

I've got a problem to create a local network between my PC WinXp and a PC Win98.
How did I configure my network? I've just followed the different steps which the WindowsXP'assistant told me. When my PCWinXP was configurated, I create the configuration disk for
the other PC with the same assistant. Then I executate the file created ("netsetup.exe") on this PCWin98.

Then, I choose this configuration:
PC WinXP:
IP: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Workgroup: MSHOME
Nework card: Fast Ethernet PCI Realtek RTL8139 Family

PC Win98:
IP: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Workgroup: MSHOME
Network card: Peabird Ethernet PCI 10/100

(Somebody thas told me I shouldn't use these IPs. So I've alos tried with this one:192.68.1.2 and 192.168.1.3, but it doesn't change anything).
Someone has also told me to create a gate on my PC Win98, using the IP 192.168.0.1 (the PCXp's IP!). But I don't really think it's necessary while I'm not sharing any internet connection, I
just want to create a simple network between the two PCs.

The good protocols are configured on the two PC's.

So, what is the result ?
I've tried "ipconfig" for each PC; result OK, the good parameters were considered for each network card.
When I ping the PCWin98 locally, it's ok, I've got an answer. When I ping the Pc WinXp from the PC Win98, it doesn't work, no response...
When I ping the PCWinXp locally, problem, no response. But when I ping the PCWin98 from the PC WinXP, it's ok, I've got the answer.

I've read in the faq that the problem could be in this case a firewall. But I uninstall all the firewall on my PCs, even the default one on WinXp (ICF). I uninstall ZoneAlarm (the firewall I use) with the uninstall tool given by the fabricant, but it seems it doesn't uninstall everything, because when I install it again, it tells me "Do you want to delete older files which have been installed first on your computer?" or something like that...Is it the cause of my problem? I don't know...Well, with or without this firewall, the problem is the same...
I also have antivirus on my machines (norton on WinXp's one, mcaffee on the Win98's one); are there firewalls integrated in these antivirus? Maybe the problem could come from there if it's the case...

When I try to see the PCs "through" Windows, I just see the PCWin98 on the PCWin98 (normal, i can ping it!), but I don't see anything on the PCWinXp: it says "MSHOME is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission . The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently
available. "
So, as mentionned in the faq, I have verified that the Computer Browser service was running on at least one Windows XP computer on the network (in fact I've just got only one PC WinXp in my local network): it was ok.

I don't know what to do. Please help.
Thanks.

Sounds you have made good checks there.

I run XP Home and zonealarm and Norton AV without problems. (Still, leave ZA and AV out for now until connections are working).

The original IPs you used are fine and exactly what you should use. You don't need a gateway.

A possible reason for your problem:
- Realtek NICs can be a problem in PCI slot 1. Move it to slot 2 or trash it and get a different NIC.

Also :
Heres a checklist to run thro to enable PCs to share resources (some you have already done):
Note : You only need one protocol (NetBT = Netbios over TCP/IP)
- All PCs have TCP/IP installed.
- All PCs have Netbios over TCP/IP enabled.
- All PCs have the same workgroup.
- All PCs have a unique computer name.
- ALL PCs have network shares defined directly under c:.
- ALL NICS are on the same subnet (typically IP 192.168.0.* subnet 255.255.255.0).
- MS Client and file & printer sharing are checked on each NIC.
- All NICs have their node type = broadcast or Hydrid (check with Ipconfig /all).
- XP's ICF firewall is permanently disabled.
- All 3rd party firewalls are disabled (until connection is working).

If you don't know how to configure or check any of them just ask. (I don't have 98 so might struggle to help with that).
