hello folks..
as the subject says im having trouble sharing files on 2 pc's with xp pro.
my setup is :
i have a ericsson hm220dp dsl modem
that is connected to my 5 port switch hub.
and the 2 pc's are connected to the hub.
i have 2 dynamic ip's from my isp one for each pc's
the ip's i get them only share the first set of numbers. ie:
80.xxx.xx.x

the ip's are assigned over dhcp from the modem.
i have tried all sorts of stuff, and still cant get the file sharing to work.
i can ping between the pc's
i can do tracerts between the pc's, but it shows that there is no connection locally between them.

like :
1 27 ms 27 ms 26 ms lo1.hrnxx3.ip.tele. xxxxxxx
2 55 ms 55 ms 55 ms 0x50c61e7a.hrnxx3.adsl-dhcp.tele.xxx

if i remove the dhcp assigned ip's and enter one manually it works ok.. but then i got no internet avaiable..
any suggestions how i fix this?
thanks for any input in advance.
sorry for spelling. english is not my native language

You really should not try to do file sharing like this. Your PCs are open to intrusion from the internet. You should disable all protocols and services on the connections except TCP/IP, and enable XP's ICF on both PCs.

To share files between PCs that are connected to the internet you need them behind a NAT firewall.

There are two main options:

1. Connect one PC to the other and install XP's ICS. (You need two NICs in the internet host PC).

2. Buy a hardware NAT router and connect the router to the modem and your switch to the router. (This is the best solution).

Doing either of these will give you internet access and file sharing.

You don't need two internet IPs unless you are running internet server services on them both..

thanks for the reply.
i got it all sortet out last night, seems like the problem is that the mask is not the same on the dynamic ip's.
basicly i have 2 options, since i dont want one pc to be dependant on the other.
1. get 2 fixed ip's within the same mask from the isp.
2. get a router.

1 is no go, isp cant garentee that fixed ip's assigned is within the same mask. *spoke with them before i vent to bed this morning*

so i need to go out and get a router, looking into this now. leaning toward a linksys atm.
when i got the 2 dynamic ip's i bought a firewall solution allso, so i think ive been in the clear about exposing me 8)
im not really a networking wizard, so i learned alot last night, it kept me on my toes through the night.

again thanks for the reply, got it all sortet out now 8)
