Currently, I have my computer set up as a gateway using Intel AnyPoint USB adapter and WinXP ICS to share my cable modem connection with 2 other computers also using Intel Anypoint adapters. Since range is a big consideration, but not speed, I'm pleased with this setup. And as cheap as 802.11b wireless routers are these days, I still don't want to buy 4 new client adapters. (I'm going to add a 4th computer to my network soon.)

Here is my question:

So my computer does not need to be on, I was thinking of doing the following:

- adding a 4 port wired router,

-picking up a Proxim Home RF wireless gateway/router that would be connected to one of the ethernet ports on the wired router. I understand that it can be configured in 'bridge mode' Does that mean it could be used as an access point? And if so, does that mean the wired router could assign the IPs to the wireless clients?

This would mean that when I am ready to change to 802.11b, I could buy a new access point and client adapters, correct?

Thanks!

You've got me confused with your ideas there. But I can give this advice.

1. You don't need, or want, two routers.

2. I would suggest you get a combined wireless router/4 port switch. You can use it as a wired network and add wireless clients whenever you want.
