I have installed network cards in various models of computer with various processors ranging from P1's with 166MMX and 64mb mem to a P4 with 256mb mem. I have A PIII 933 with 386mb mem and 2x PI 200MMX with 96mb mem on a hub at my home. I have added a friends P1 166MMX with 128mb mem and his P4 1.3ghz with 256mb mem to the hub as a test. All run perfectly and all see one another and share files and printers. A nice crazy little setup as a test for something that is to come.

All thes pc's run Win98SE excepting 1 which runs Win95C. The lot so far mentioned have Intel Pentium chips. A myriad of hard disks and configurations, printers scanners, cameras etc. we even have 2 modems on the setup and can share internet connections in various ways.

Now I also have a friend who has a Intel CELERON 800mhz with 128mb of memory who wants to join in on the fun and games.

But for the death of me I cannot get this machine to accept a network card. It does not see the PnP card and even if we tell it to "manually" search for new hardware it does not find the card. We have checked the BIOS and find no reference to onboard network etc on the mb(that we have to disable or can use - it has no network connector on it either). But we find no logical reason for it not to accept a network card.

We have swopped out network cards and they all work (believe me that is a chore to ensure that they all work (only 3 are the same but they were tested in ALL machines) and NONE want to work in the CELERON machine.

Any suggestions?

Try different PCI slots?

Reset CMOS to defaults, make sure there is no resource reservations in BIOS.

Does ESCD pick it up? (some bioses give a quick listing of hardware prior to boot, does it show up there?)

Remove any "Unknown devices" in device manager, and reboot, let them redetect

The fact that the processor is a Celery Stick shouldnt make a diffrence- I suspect that it is a hardware/resouce issue. Let me know what you find out.

There may also be a chance the difficulties are related to the operating system. Do any of the cards have accompanying DOS level disgnostics utilities?
