I'm running a small network with a Mac G4, 2 XP Pro boxes, & a Windows 98 machine. The machines can all see each other (except for the Mac when booted into OS 9.2, but that's another issue). However, the XP boxes won't let the 98 box access the drives. The XP boxes can access the 98 machine without a problem. Simple file sharing isn't enabled.

When attempting to login to the XP boxes from the 98 machine I use the same username & password I use on the XP boxes (way redundant, but less confusing for me). I drilled down & checked the NTFS permissions on the XP boxes & believe they are share appropriately.

When I attempt to login to the XP boxes from the 98 box, I am prompted for a password (IP$). I enter the password & am informed "password is incorrect". I searched for the *.pwd files on the 98 box, but didn't find any. I have Windows logon enabled for the 98 box.

What am I missing? I can copy folders to the 98 box from the XP box by accessing the 98 machine from XP, but I would like 98 box to behave.

Thanks in advance,

The Bluez

The usernames and passwords must be identical to those used to log on to other computers. Create these usernames and passwords on the XP machine. If you don't have a password, then just supply the username. The reason why you are prompted for a null password is because the Guest account is disabled by default. You can also just enable the Guest, but for greater security it would be wise to create an account the matches the other machines.

Since I stated I was using the same userID & password on all machines, your post doesn't make sense to me. I've tried turning the guest account on & off also. Either way, I'm still receive the same password error.
