XP easy networking is another MS fantasy, I think. I have a Desktop and a Laptop that I have linked with a Firewire. I've read numerous articles that say this is possible with XP. Both computers display a notice of the 1394 connection, however It is impossible to get the computers to share anything. I've run the network setup wizard on both machines. I created a workgroup called Firewire, I named the Desktop, DESKTOP, and the laptop LAPTOP so there wouldn't be any confusion there. If I run ipconfig at the command prompt, it lists an IP for the firewire connections, however if I try to add that into the add network place setup wizard it gives me an "invalid" popup. If I try to browse to find the other computers, they don't show up under Windows Networking.

Any ideas?

I got issues with 1394 too... I wasn't intending to use it as a network, just hookup my backup dvd drive or video camera.
The new connection added to the old ethernet network confused the wizard and it's been 4 days I'm pulling my hair.

Then the HD failed on me, so now I'm imaging a new drive...
(I created a thread about it http://forums.practicallynetworked.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=860 )

good luck!
