If you can impart your networking knowledge on this newbie, I would be most appreciative. I have been pulling out what little hair I have left.
I upgraded both my computers to Win XP and have lost my file sharing capabilities and can't figure out why. When Win ME was on both computers, I could file and print share just fine.
I have ATT (attbi) cable modem service. A while back, when network switches were extremely cheap and routers were still a bit expensive, I opted for cheaper method and purchased a Linksys EZXS55W 5 port workgroup switch. The ATT cable goes to the cable modem, the cable modem is connected to the switch (via cat 5 RJ-45 wires) input, and the 2 computers (with one NIC each) are connected to 2 of the switch outputs. Because my cable modem and switch are in a (now) finished part of the basement, I can't really change this cabling configuration.
Both computers can connect to the internet independently, but I can't get either computer to recognize the other. I have tried different configurations with XP network wizard, but no luck. The XP firewall is disabled. Since I can't run cable to use 2 NIC's in either computer, will ICS or the TCP/IP protocol ever work??? Did it work in Win ME only because I was using NetBEUI or is that way out in left field?
Seems like I should still be able to file share, even though I won't have any network security. Any thoughts?
Thanks, Jeff
