I have a 4 port linksys dsl/cable router. I have perfect connectivity between two computers in my house right now. I am trying to add a third. The cable is actually turning out to be the problem. I added connectors to the ends of about 25 ft of cat5 cable that was given to me. at first i just thought that the cable might be bad, but if i use it between the router and the modem, it works fine. If i use it between any one of the pc's and the router XP tellsme that the cable is plugged in (continuity) but it will not talk over the line in any form or fashion.
Of the eight wires in the twisted pairs, are only certain wires used for certain functions? I thought the computer was color blind meaning as long as the ends are crimped the same, it should work. I am not using a crossover cable and have found no need for one unless I use my additional hub.
I made two additional cables and niether of them work to the pc's either. They work just fine between the router and the modem though.
What is going on here???
