Hey, maybe someone can help, my computer keeps dropping it's wireless connection whenever I try to download a file. It will get 15-20 secs into the download and then just completely lose the connection (it doesn't deteriorate just drops). Not really sure what is happening, my other computers are working fine (I am also assuming the reason my games keep losing connection are due to the same problem) and I can surf the net without losing the connection. I have updated the drivers for the card and the firmware for the router. Here's my setup:
I have a cable connection that is routed through a USR8000 router, and connected via a regular lan to lan port is a DI-614+ wireless router (using a patch cable). I am using a Orinoco gold card to connect to this router and I have turned off power management. Also, I tried a wired connection to the DI-614+ just to check to see if it was the router, its not, although I suppose it could be the wireless settings so here they are just in case:
Channel: 6
Wep: disabled
Mac filter is on though
DHCP is off on the DI-614 so the USR8000 handles that
Beacon Interval: 50ms (was at 100, but was still dropping me)
RTS Threshold: 4095, it says it should be between 256-2432 but it won't let me change it
Fragmentation: 4095, same thing as above
DTIM interval: 3
Preamble Type: Short type
Authentication: Auto
4X mode is on
Game Mode is off
UPnP is on
I think thats the relevent information (Not really sure what all that means as I have never used wireless I just wanted a quick and easy way to move my laptop around =) unfortunately it has not been the greatest process as of yet =)
Thanks in advance

What do you have to do to remake the connection? Do you have to reboot the DI-614?
Your updates are not clear. Did you update the card driver and firmware. Did you update firmware in both routers?
Is your ISP Cable or DSL ?
The card settings look OK except the RTS looks strange - it normally is at 2432. I don't know what that 'game mode' is - have you tried it?

Sorry about not being clearer, I updated the firmware on the DI-614+ but I only updated the drivers for the orinoco card.
I have a cable connection.
I don't have to reboot or anything, it reconnects just fine.
Also, I called d-link and they said the rts thing was ok, even though default is 2432 (It won't let me change it).
I also explained to them that the card drops the connection whenever it basically gets 'under' stress (basically whenever it starts to use alot of bandwidth) and they said its because the card is set on long preamble instead of short preamble, however the orinoco doesn't have short preamble? Anyways I tried setting the router (DI-614+) to long preamble and the dropping it still occurs.
Oh and game moding is some type of firewall device, shouldn't be having an effect because I never enabled the firewall on the DI-614 (The other router takes care of that).
Anyways I hope that cleared things up a lil.

Some strange things there.
I have a Dell wireless card which is a rebadged orinoco gold card. It does have short preamble and it can be set to RTS 2432.
I wonder if you have the correct driver. There was a 'winter 2002' driver and firmware update for the gold card. Check Orinoco's (now Proxim) website. A call to Orinoco tech support may be worthwhile.
What OS are you using. If XP with SP1 the driver is already in there.
One of the other threads here jogged my memory. You need to ensure 'Authenticate for 802.11x' is unchecked or it will disconnect you.

Alright thanks for the info on the preamble.
I have the latest drivers and firmware, and called tech support (D-Link wasn't really any help, but Orinoco at least put some effort into it =) ), no luck thus far. Starting to think its the router, but won't know til I can get a second wireless card to test it.
Oh and I'm on XP sp1 and have Auth 802.11x unchecked (actually the whole page is greyed out, I also don't have any wep enabled).
Thanks again for the info

Maybe I'm confused here. Those wireless settings (preamble, RTS etc)you posted in your first post - they are the driver settings for the card on the PC ? Or they are the settings in the DI-614 ?
I still say the preamble and RTS are wrong and need changing. If you cannot change them there is something wrong with the driver/firmware. That needs sorting.

Those are the ones on the router, sorry if that wasn't clear. As far as I can tell, I can't change any of the settings on the card (Only thing in the advanced tab is power management and channel select). Anyways, whenever I try to change the RTS on the router (from 4095) it says invalid range. The preamble can be changed, and I've tried both short and long, results are still the same.

I see - I did think you were referring to the card settings.
Two new points then:
1. You should see a lot more settings on the card driver advanced tab - so thats strange - but normally you never change them so I guess its no real problem. Anyway I can assure you the card RTS will be 2432 and preamble short.
2. I went to D-Links site to find the manual for the DI-614 and came across some FAQs that may answer your problem. I think the router is the problem.
Read this:

HEY! That fixed it, THANKS A LOT. I had searched their fricking FAQ like 10 times, I don't know how I missed that.
Thanks again!
