I wrote Linksys an email about this problem and their reply was a stock email to get me out of their hair, so hopefully someone here can offer some real advice:

I've got a Linksys 4 Port Cable/DSL Router w/Switch (firmware 1.43) and I am running an FTP server. I have a static IP on the local network and I have my server set up to listen on port 2112, and the appropriate TCP port is forwarded on the router.

I have a friend who is not behind a router and he can connect to me and download with no problems. However I have another friend who is also behind the same model of router I am using, and although she can connect to me, the session drops while her client is retrieving the directory listing.

Does anyone know what could be causing this? Here's what I've tried:

1. Changing the MTU size to 1000-2000.

2. Asking my friend to try both PORT and PASV.

3. Forwarding ports 20-21 on the router and changing my FTP server program to listen on port 21.

4. Disabling "Block WAN Request."

None of these has helped. I also tried removing port 21 from my port forwarding settings, and instead enabling port 21 on the UPNP settings tab, and not only did that NOT work, but it completely blocked the incoming packets for some reason, i.e. - I was not even seeing a connection attempt on my FTP server. Normally, when using port forwarding instead of UPNP, I would at least see the connection attempt but it would fail when sending the directory listing. UPNP services were enabled on the "Password" tab of the router settings, so I'm really not sure what else to do to get this to work.

I am completely stumped here. Like I said, my other friend who is not behind a router can connect to me fine. Does my friend who is behind a router need to change some kind of settings? If so, what exactly does she need to do?

Any help at all would be appreciated.

if you are running an FTP server then you must use the DMZ of the router. in doing this place your computer (that you want to fucktion as a server) in a static IP as follows:

IP: 192.168.1.105
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.1.1

in doing this go to the router set- up page..and go to advance and then look for the DMZ input the last IP of the computer which is .105

Dont forget to powercycle. poweroff the computer the router and also the modem. wait for 1 minute and then power on the modem; make sure that you are getting a solid lights from the modem before powering on the rest.

i would like to remind you that if you have any personal firewall installed on your server or any anti virus, disable them
