wireless access point help

I currently have an SMC wireless network set up using a wireless broadband router using the 2.4GHz frequency. I would like to upgrade to 802.11a to use the 5GHz frequency to avoid interference with other 2.4GHZ devices I have. My question is if I connect a 802.11a access point to my router will my network be on the 5GHz frequency and stop the interference?
