Hi, i guess this is my first time to set-up a tread.hehehe

I was kind of wondering why is it it's very hard to network 2 computers. One has XP and the other one is windows 98.

They have the same workgroup name, no IP conflicts, Net Beui installed on 98 and IPX/SPX installed on XP, File and printer sharing?yes i have that one too. but still the 2 of them cannot see each other behind a switch. no for some reasons most of my friends told me that i should dissable the firewall to which i did. but still it doesnt work. ive tried other sites for reference but still all the info that is posted i had done it already.

The 98 can ping the XP but it cannot access the files. the XP cannot ping nor see the 98 under the network.

Any ideas?

It shouldn't be difficult (but sometimes it is).

What does your network look like ? (i.e. how are the PCs connected, have you internet you are sharing?)

Why are you using different protocols (Netbeui and IPX). You only need TCP/IP.

What firewall are you usign?

Give me some information and we might track down what the problem is.

Actually NETBEUI could not be installed on XP that why i installed IPX/SPX although its for novel, thats what microsoft website suggested, just to make sure i also installed the NETBEUI on the 98. ive done this a couple of times over at my friends house and it actually worked.i have disabled the built in firewall for XP and i uninstalled my firewall on the 98 which is the Black ice defender.

Both of my pc's are connected to a switch. now the switch is not a problem because both pc has an existing internet connection.(they are connected to a router by the way). ive tried changing ports like almost everything.

We can run thro my standard checklist to enable PCs to share resources (I expect you have seen this before):

You have already confirmed some of these:
- All PCs have TCP/IP installed - OK
- All PCs have Netbios over TCP/IP enabled - CHECK THIS
- All PCs have the same workgroup - OK
- All PCs have a unique computer name - CHECK THIS
- ALL PCs have network shares defined directly under c:. - DOUBLE CHECK THIS
- ALL NICS are on the same subnet (typically IP 192.168.1.* subnet 255.255.255.0) - OK.
- MS Client and file & printer sharing are checked on each NIC - CHECK THIS
- All NICs have their node type = broadcast or Hydrid (check with Ipconfig /all or winipcfg) - CHECK THIS
- XP's ICF firewall is permanently disabled - OK
- All 3rd party firewalls are disabled and uninstalled and deleted (until connection is working) - OK

If you want to use IPX then make sure it installed on both PCs. You can uninstall Netbeui.

hi Linksys101.
I happen to be having the same problem and one thing I'm not too sure of is an error window that pops up on my win 98 pc on reboot "failed to load NEWDOTNET.DLL" . I'm trying to hunt down reaources on this topic atm but heres my situation:

Host = Dell Inspiron 8100 xp-pro w/ Dell 8255x- based PCI Ethernet Adapter (10/100)

Client = Win 98 pc= Gateway gl350 p2 192.0 mb ram -Linksys 10/100 Lan Card

Linksys 10/100 router
2 cables - 1 to each pc.

"Dell xp Local Connection Properties"
(these are whats checked )
Client for MS Networks
NWLink NetBios
QoS Packet Scheduler
File and Print Sharing
Internet Protocol (TC/IP)

Gateway Network Properties
Client for MS Networks
DialUp Adapter
LinkSys Line 100 Xv5 Fast Ethernet Adapter
NetBUI Dialup Adapter
NetBUI LinkSys 100xv5 Fast Ethernet Adapter
TC/IP Dial Up Adapter
TC/IP LinkSya Adapter
File and Printer Sharing

now if what the moderator is saying in his example is true, it sounds like I (in mny case) need to eliminate all the properties on the win98 pc that dont match the Host pc (Dell)
is this correct ?

actually i have already figured out the problem with my 2 pc's well for me i just installed an IPX/SPX on 98 and try to power cycle and it worked great. i have created a new user account so that XP can access my 98. silly me,hehehehe in your case dood, with your configuration it should work, you dont have to remove anything. but i have to thank greenstead for this. thanks dood!!

Boog, you and Trunks should probly start your own thread.

Boog: try installing Netbeui on your XP PC, instructions here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/301041/en-us

Trunks: try "winipconfig.exe" if your useing Win 98, instead of ipconfig.

Nightowl, good catch on the "WINIPCFG" vs. "IPCONFIG", but this thread is a litte "stale" at this point where Trunks last posted almost two months ago and Boog at over THREE YEARS ago...
